Year 1

What makes the best curtain?

Children will look at common materials and the everyday items they can be made into.

They will describe the properties of these materials and use their knowledge from investigations to make design choices for a curtain/blind.

The children will develop a range of skills to embellish their curtain which includes printing and tie-dying.

From evaluations of their prototyping the children will design and make a panel for the curtain/blind.

Project outcomes:

• Make a class curtain/blind which keeps out the light

Autumn 2

Technology

Which structure is significant to our local area and why?

• A structure created out of paper and card inspired by local history.

Engineering 

Make a toy car which meets the following design brief as a minimum:

• has an even number of wheels; will roll down a ramp and travel at least 1m;
• has a design element which reflects them and their heritage (e.g. a flag on the roof like a mini);
• has one new feature for the ‘car of the future’

Spring 2

Art

Produce observational drawings of plant life around the school ground

Science

A model with accompanying fact file to show their understanding of vertebrates displayed as a Natural History Museum.

Summer 2

Performance Art

A performance, a meal and a fact file inspired by one of the four nations of the UK.
