Key Stage 2 SATs

At the end of Year 6, your child will take national curriculum assessments in English grammar, punctuation and spelling, English reading and mathematics. The tests help measure the progress pupils have made, and identify if they need additional support in a certain area.

Each child will receive a school which will identify if they have met the Expected Standard for the end of KS2, achieved a Greater Depth standard, or have not met the end of year 6 standard. Your child’s writing is assessed by the Year 6 teaching staff and the leadership team. This information is used as part of the transition meetings with their secondary schools.

The KS2 SATs will take place during May each year. The children’s results are then released in July. Here are our results from 2025.

Phonics Screening Check (PSC)

During your child’s education at Lime Tree Primary School there will be a strong emphasis on phonics and early reading, in Reception and Year 1. At the end of Year 1, your child will participate in the Phonics Screening Check which is designed to assess your child’s phonics knowledge. This will take place in the week beginning 8th June 2026.

Phonics is an effective way of teaching children to read where they are taught how to:

• recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes

• identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make - such as‘sh’ or ‘oo’

• blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word

Children can then use this knowledge to ‘decode’ new words that they hear or see. This is the first important step in learning to read.

The phonics screening check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words. Pseduo-words are words that are phonically decodable but are not actual words with an associated meaning.

Children are given a score out of 40 and those who have not met the standard in year 1 (32/40 in 2023), they will re-take the check in year 2.

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

When your child is in Year 4, they will participate in the Multiplication Tables Check between 1st June - 12th June 2026. The purpose of the check is to determine whether your child can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help your child’s school to identify if your child may need additional support.

The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times table questions. Your child will be able to answer 3 practice questions before taking the actual check. They will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. At a later date, the school will be able to see your child’s score out of 25. There is no pass mark for this check. The RBA is a short, interactive and practical assessment of your child’s early literacy, communication, language and mathematics skills when they begin school, using materials that most children of your child’s age will be familiar with.

It will provide a helpful snapshot of where your child is when they enter reception, so they can be supported in the most appropriate way. Please click on the link below to download the official Government Information for Parents leaflet.
